Week 2
By Ahyl | November 20, 2007
Table of contents for - Rise of the Phoenix
This is where it begins…
I have started to strip the car with a 3M paint strip pad attached to my Drill.
(Part Number 03172NA)
These Things work great. They are hard enough to get through -Primer -OE paint and aftermarket paint, yet soft enough not to harm the Aluminum Hood.
I have Used a Harbor Freight Dent Stud Removal Tool (Stud Welder Part Number 03223) , to begin the process of moving small dents around the drivers rear quarter panel. This tool is very simple to use and dirt cheap-around 80 dollars.
For one job it might not be worth it. I plan to work on my own cars for as long as I live, so I collect tools.
Here is what it looks like with the studs attached…..
At this Writing, I have the car 3/4’s stripped. That has surprised me. This is a year long project. I expected to have the car stripped by April. Looks like I may be finished by Black Friday.
As you can see the car looks great in Bare metal. The bumper is made of plastic and will go through a different stripping process.
Here is a picture of the polished bare metal.
Finally that brings me to Color. This is really starting to torture me. I am sure that most of my Miata Buddies want me to shut up about it. But I need more opinions! I have settled on Black Cherry. Now Black Cherry comes in different flavors. It can have a Purple, or Brown effect. I would like My Black Cherry paint to be Black with a red halo.
The Color that is leading the race is Harley Davidson’s BC. This BC is just the combo I’m looking for. It looks as if it is black that flips back to Red in the right light.

The BMW z3 BC Is Number 2 Very Nice BC. It has a purple flavor to it though.
The Scion BC is Number 3

Another Purple BC. It looks very good at night.
The Honda BC is Number 4

It has more red to it than the other colors.
Most surprisingly, The Miata BC is number 5
Why?
I hang around a lot of Miatas and I really would like to be a little different, If not for that it would probably be number two. I haven’t totally ruled it out yet.

Have you considered using an alternative form of paint remover like a chemical stripper. John and I used Airplane remover and when we did the small airport near his house closed down.
I would think that something like Homer Formsby’s finish remover would be just the ticket.

2. Chemical Strippers work great, In fact I will use Chemical strippers to remove the paint on all of the plastic pieces (After they are removed). They can also be a giant PITA. Chemicals can come back and haunt you when you are painting a car.
As you can see, the Mechanical stripper worked quickly and will actually leave enough of a bite on the metal for the first coat of primer.

How do I vote for none of the colors? I think you should just clear coat the bare metal.

You check the “none of the above” if you dont like any of the colors.

If you must consider a dark cherry color, how about the Garnet Mica from the ‘02-’03 Miata?

I like Fez’s choice. You remember Phil’s car.
