Some people are sold virtual blight

    By Jay | November 27, 2007

I spent about 1 hour today on the phone with an attorney. No I am not in trouble. We were talking about his internet marketing. He moved his domain to a company specializing in hosting and marking for law firms. Now, I am not saying that hosting/marketing companies services are good or bad or if it is delivered as advertised. I am sure that they do a fine job with their work. What we are talking about is what people will pay for services and not get any proof of what they are paying for.

My client (to remain nameless) claims that he is paying about $1500 per month for hosting of a 25 page web site. This fee includes the “positioning” of their site on search engines. Now I have searched all of the possible keywords that he would have used and unless I actually search on his firms name he does not appear anywhere on the search engines. The only search optimization that is being done is in the meta data on the pages. Now you would think that for the fee being charged he would get some reporting about his website’s traffic. He does not get any traffic reports about what happens on his site, has no access to the site to make changes and only gets to make changes after paying an additional fee. When he asked about his placement on the search engines he is told that he appears at the top all the time. We know now that this is bull crap.

I will be meeting with him on Wednesday evening to talk about some other ways to do this. I am sure that with a budget like that we can do something better.

[update] I got the gig and have started on the project. It will be interesting to see how much money Google is going to consume to get acceptable results for him.
