Week 5 -Death of “The Red”

    By Ahyl | December 4, 2007

It has been a very busy few weeks for Me. Thanksgiving, Frying Turkeys and stripping Miatas.

I have never worked on a car that I didn’t need to have ready by Monday morning, so that I could get to work. Having a second Miata gives me quite a bit of freedom, and I am enjoying the process.

During the Stripping process, I have found precious little bondo. That’s one of the great advantages of living in the great state of Texas. No snow. No salt. There was a little bondo in the upper door.

Not anymore. The circles show the outline of the dents.

But… If you do live in the snow belt, here is a piece of advice. Watch the inner bottom of the front fenders, It seems to accumulate stuff that could start a patch of rust.

Little nuggets of information like this is why I go to extremes when I start a project. None of what I am doing is truly necessary, But I hope that I can learn something in the process of rebuilding this car.

This week I have completely finished stripping the visible red from the car. Next week I plan to clear the Door jambs and remove some parts for painting.

Ains, how are you going to keep the car from surface rusting and requiring you to do the stripping all over again?

      Good question,
      Absolutely nothing.

It’s been weeks now and there has been only one or two spots maybe a millimeter across.

One swipe of the sandpaper takes care of that.

It’s probably not good to leave it in bare metal but since I tend to it every weekend and it’s in a dry Garage, I’m not worrying about it.
